PowerSUP, SUP with a trolling motor

Power up your SUPing game with a SUP power train upgrade

It takes three steps:

  • get yourself a paddle board
  • mount your engine onto the board
  • hock up the battery

If you have an old paddleboard that you’re no longer using, you might consider converting it into a trolling motor-powered paddleboard. This project can breathe new life into your unused equipment, transforming it into a versatile and exciting watercraft. By attaching a small trolling motor to the paddleboard, you can effortlessly glide across the water without the need for constant paddling. This setup is ideal for leisurely cruising on lakes, rivers, or even calm coastal areas, offering a unique and enjoyable way to explore the water while repurposing an old piece of gear.

All aboard the power SUP!

First, glue down the engine mounting brackets. I would recommend using four mounting brackets to hold the mount securely.

There’s a particular trolling engine mount that can be adapted for paddleboards: the swaying arm design engine mount. When assembling the engine mount, do not follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Install the plate upside down, with the bottom flush to the board or surface.

During the board installation, plug both arms into the mount holes on the board. Then, attach the mounting plate onto the arms. Attach the U-bolt and screws onto the U-bolt.

Power UP!!

Most trolling engines are designed for a 12v battery, also known as a car battery. Buy one from your favorite store. Go ahead and strap it down; it will keep you going for a while.
